As Russia intensifies its attacks on energy, hundreds of thousands of Ukrainians are left in the dark. Deaf people, who rely on their eyesight, face an even harsher reality.
Liked, restacked & shared to Bluesky (as always). Many years ago, I used to be part of a large church, which had a special ministry to the deaf community. I was a teacher in the church and always made sure to simplify my sermons so that the signers (who were not professionals!) would be able understand what I said - I did not "dumb" down the content, just the vocabulary - after all, not much point being a teacher, if your audience does not understand you. I remember being amused to hear the daughter of one of elders confide that her father used a thesaurus to complicate his language! Afterwards, I used to speak to the deaf & hearing-impaired members to make sure my message had got across. I am now a Humanist, but I still try to facilitate communication 😊
love this issue. thanks
Ivanna is completely amazing! Thank you for sharing some of the day-to-day experiences as this war grinds on.
Thank you. We are very happy to share Ivanna’s story! Was there a moment in her story that particularly moved you?

Thank you for sharing! It’s a lovely example of communication. Do you feel that kind of care is still missing in many public spaces today?
Not so much here in the UK, but can't say for elsewhere.
Excellent episode, as always. Thanks for providing a perspective many of us would never think of!
Thank you for your kind words. What surprised you most?
