Russia’s attacks on Ukraine’s heating infrastructure have turned the -20°C winter into a harsh test of survival for homeless people. Ivan hasn’t had a home since he left Crimea in 2011.
I was homeless in Canada for several months as a teen. Managed to climb out of it with help. I was astonished at how powerless you are when you have no “stuff”, no money, and nowhere to stay. Initially, I didn’t even CARE about the food part of things, I just wanted to be WARM and safe from predators.
At least I wasn’t being BOMBED by the Russian military while I tried to figure it out!
Fantastic! It really makes me think that the world leaders and the ultra-rich, who seem so obsessed with living forever, should notice that the legacies that truly last are from those who reach out to help others.

Thank you for sharing something so personal. I’m glad you managed to climb out of it! What helped you most during that difficult time?
Not having an addiction.
And kind people.
Curious: is Depaul Ukraine named after St Vincent de Paul, who inspired a network of neighbors helping neighbors in need? Or is the name coincidental?
Yes! Depaul Ukraine is part of Depaul International, which takes its name and philosophy from St Vincent de Paul
