In Trump's first term, Medvedev floated the suggestion of "spheres of influence," meaning America would control the western hemisphere, Putin would control what countries formerly made up the Soviet Union, and China would control the Far East. Not only does Trump's interest in controlling Greenland, Venezuela, Columbia, Cuba, and possibly Argentina signal that he is open to the spheres of influence concept, it is giving Putin the green light to pursue Russia's territorial ambitions, and extends that privilege to Xi as well. With Trump's stated intent to take Greenland, after having "subdued" Venezuela, Putin is now emboldened to accelerate his war with Ukraine, and Xi feels encouraged to take Taiwan and exert China's power in the South China Sea, thus controlling the shipping lanes vital to many countries in the Far East.

RE: “There are major geopolitical implications, including for Ukraine. Russia’s close ties to Venezuela – and its dependence on oil revenues to fund its war effort – means that Russia will suffer from the latest changes.”

There’s another way in which Ukraine can benefit, depending on how the US proceeds with the remaining Venezuelan government:

Iran manufacturers weapons in Venezuela that are used by Russia on Ukraine. Not sure whether they’re making drones, missiles or both, but they do have at least one weapons factory set up there. If the US manages to get it shut down, that will also negatively impact the Russians.
