The practice of blackmailing family members is gut-wrenching. But you can't negotiate with bullies, murderers, and thugs. You'll never have any assurance that doing what they ask will lead to a good outcome. More likely they'll just keep asking for more. And your loved ones will continue to be in Russian hands.

I’m not surprised by the Moldovan incursions, and I expect more of the same. Unlike the Baltics, Moldova is not covered by the NATO umbrella. That makes it far more vulnerable. It also has one of those notorious Russian breakaway provinces, creating a staging ground for further chaos.

Excellent reporting! I love reading all of the deep dives, the news at this hour, and I especially love the pets of war!!

Just writing to let you know, I frequently listen to the audio while commuting to/from work, and each of your articles reads the editor’s note 3 times in a row, every time. Not sure if it’s a setting, but thought you would like to know.

🫂 So relieved this brave father made it back out - no doubt we will eventually hear the full story when it is safe for everyone to tell it. Just more confirmation of how despicable the Russian people enabling Putin are, at whatever level they occupy in the system. Not all of us would have the courage or the cunning to try to rescue our child from the unthinkable, but absolutely we can understand his motivation 💛💙💪
