Protests sparked by drastic inflation are raging all over Iran. Mehdi has spent years watching Iran’s water shortage drive the country to a tipping point.
Iran has spent billions of dollars, probably tens of billions of dollars, on building military proxies and terrorist groups around the Middle East instead of developing and improving the lives of its people. In this it is similar in many ways to Russia and it is no surprise they have worked together towards similar destructive ends. Iranian drone technology is responsible for killing thousands of Ukrainians. Iran is now using those military proxies which are flooding into Iran to help slaughter thousands of Iranians and maintain the regime. Ukraine would greatly benefit from the collapse of the Iranian regime but they are facing extremely brutal and violent forces which are willing to kill as many Iranians as necessary to stay in power.
So sad. Water resource management is a skill which was mastered in the world long ago. But totalitarian regimes insist on Doing It My Way even when that goes against well-known truths. But truth wins out.
The current regime in the USA is doing the same thing with economic and trade policy.
A post-revolution Iranian government could benefit tremendously from Israel’s world-leading water management savvy.
The post doesn’t mention another country with Iranian trade relations — i.e., Russia. That’s where they’re buying most or all of their drones from.
The fall of the mullahs can have very positive impacts for Ukraine if this arms dealing ends. Even a tariff, if actually applying against Trump BFF Putin, can be helpful, given Russia’s struggling economy.
The fall of the Islamic government of Iran can have world-shaking impacts equal to those of the Soviet Union’s collapse.
In 1979 I watched on as the new Islamic Republic encouraged a local electrical wholesaler to default on a payment of £1.5m, which it owed to a British manufacturer. It seemed to me then to be a most inauspicious beginning for a republic, especially one that purported to be founded on Islam, and the years have shown that Iran is not a country with high morals - whether towards the West or towards its own people. The Shah of Iran lacked morality, but at least permitted his people many freedoms - just look at photos of Tehran from the 70's, but the current rulers prefer to control & suffocate the population. They also prefer to spend the nation's wealth on war, rather than infrastructure - in that Iran is Trump country!

Have to admit I am not well informed about Iranian life. Politics aside this sounds like a climate change fueled disaster. One of the first of many.

Thank you for your comment. What parallels do you see with the US economic and trade policies?
