Oi vey!

Where would you usually use this expression?

In a similar vein. It’s Yiddish and the expression can adapt to a myriad of observed or heard circumstances.

For Yiddish speakers, "Oi!" (rather written "Oy!" but pronounced the same) expresses a loud sigh or exclamation of chagrin.

It’s amazing how many meanings it has around the world!

Oi! Oi! Oi!

Bombing the Moscow area oil refineries again is such a punk tactic.

I guess we’re just really committed to lowering the global carbon footprint🤔 Has this been in the headlines a lot in your local news?

🙄 I find "OI!" very effective in stopping someone in their tracks, even dogs that are about to run out onto the road! Said very loudly & with authority it seems to penetrate💪 For humans... "OI! YOU!!!" is very effective 🤗

It seems to me it is something that many different cultures use in various ways, as shared in the comments, but here in Aotearoa with our British colonial history ⁉️ Quite aside from all that, very interesting dive into punk rock in Ukraine, past & ongoing.

As for the people not supporting Zelenskyy staying & voting for him? Moot point surely, and baked into responses would be his publicly stated desire NOT to stand in elections once peace is gained ⁉️ Some do still answer polls with people who won't be on the ballot, but personally if someone said they won't be, I wouldn't say I would vote for them 🤷

I have been following the drone strikes inside Russia, in particular that lid blowing up into the air 👏👏👏 Some claim it was an own goal, in that it appears a Russian air defence projectile hit the target, either instead of or as well as the drone it was targetting 🤞 I hope that is true 💙💛💪

I think the “Oi” sound is universal, like “Om”.

It has, but much later than The Counteroffensive coverage.

Did the cat notice the Russian bombardment?

Interesting article. What you miss out though is the fact that Oi was very quickly co-opted by neo-Nazis and the national front. Bands like screwdriver and groups like combat 18 were very much at the forefront of Oi, making it a massive turnoff for those of us who were energised by two tone and the diversity of early punk. And to claim that Oi somehow ‘defined British punk’ when the first wave of DIY punk bands was already over by the time this offshoot movement came into being is just historically illiterate.

Hey, author here. Thank you for reading the article. We didn't miss the neo-Nazi punk connection, we left it out because it was not relevant to the article, especially in the context of Ukrainian oral tradition and Ukrainian punks. Even within the British Oi! scene, original bands like Sham 69 and Cockney Rejects were very much anti-nazi, even with the attempts of NF to hijack the message and the movement. So, in my opinion, the notion that white power bands were 'at the forefront' of Oi! is not entirely correct. Especially in the context of Ukrainian Oi! and streetpunk scene that our hero is part of. And we never made the claim that Oi! 'defined British punk', we just explored the linguistic and working class connection. Hope that helps. Have a nice day!

The headline quite literally said HOW OI DEFINED BRITISH PUNK so not sure why you’d claim you didn’t say that. I guess we’ll have to disagree about the Far Right but the version of skins that were exported globally in the 80s had Oi as their soundtrack and neo-Nazi ideology banked in. Choosing not to mention that - especially given the russian claims about the need to ‘deNazify’ Ukraine is at best an oversight and at worst it looks like a refusal to face unpleasant truths about the UK side if things at least. FWIW I spent a good chunk of my teenage years being chased and harassed by far/right Oi skins - hence my surprise at the omission.
