This is very interesting to learn. It’s impressive that despite the war Ukraine continues to support their place in Antarctica. I’m curious about the impact of cruise ships as there are many opportunities now to go on nature cruises. Should we?

Hello! It's a valid concern. While nature cruises offer incredible experiences, they also have an environmental footprint. Balancing exploration with responsibility is key: choosing eco-friendly operators and supporting conservation efforts can help minimize the impact.

Thanks Veronika for the great post and double thank you to scientist Davydenko for his work. This article was truly awe-inspiring. I hope the wildlife of Antartica will be spared from the worst of humanity for as long as possible in our warming world. Maybe the orcas will organize further to resist us.

🫂 Penguins & Antarctica have a special place in my heart & mind - Aotearoa-New Zealand has close affinities to both with our geographic proximity meaning aircraft leave from here to take scientists etc there & back (faster than the travel of the Ukrainian scientists!) and we are home to many species of penguin on our shores - in the breeding season we have cameras in the nests of Little Blue Penguins and can follow the progress of the world's smallest penguin from egg to fledge 😁 Reassuring that "good" actors such as Ukraine 💙💛 have veto power over the excesses of Antarctica's future as the question of future climate change & mining for minerals are inextricably linked to the rest of the world - giant ice shelves breaking off & melting & raising sea levels around the world for example 🤷

Hello! I love your connection to Antarctica and penguins! The way New Zealand observes Little Blue Penguins is truly impressive - a real example of care for nature. It’s also amazing that countries like Ukraine are involved in protecting Antarctica from climate change and resource exploitation. What do you think could be done to further strengthen international collaboration to safeguard this unique region?
