What happens in Ukraine will shape the future of Europe and the free world. Your young journalists are doing yeoman work reporting conditions on the ground, both on the front and in the civilian population. I have a better appreciation of Ukrainian culture and the changes it is going through due to the war. The reporting on how actions by the Ukrainian government are perceived by the citizenry is especially valuable. I have no problem paying for the quality journalism the Counteroffensive crew provides. Keep up the good work!
Thank you so much for the support. It means a lot to our team that the reporting is helping readers better understand the situation in Ukraine. We’re grateful to have readers like you with us!
Everything you listed as preferred options are important and interesting. I think you need to look at what is best for your growth and financial interests as well. Substack has been my main source for news of late since the corporate media has failed so miserably in their duty as America's Fourth Estate. You could certainly expand to other platforms as well. The more places you can tell these stories the better. I appreciate all your work at Substack.
Getting the word out that Ukraine is still at war, and the personal stories that are part of the war are vital to keep people informed at a level that helps replace the loss of western western journalist's coverage. Although the trump clown and republicans have abandoned democracy in favor of putin authoritarianism, most Americans support Ukraine and would rather have weapons going to a just cause than weapons going to waste in Iran for a needless war. It's remarkable that one of the wealthiest people in the world, the repulsive bezos, pulled out of Ukraine, yet you are still there and across the world, reporting on stories important to us all but known by few.
I am glad to support your efforts as a pais subscriber and encourage others to support your efforts.
Thank you for this incredibly thoughtful message and for supporting our work. We’re grateful that the reporting continues to resonate and help keep attention on Ukraine!🫂
I didn’t answer most of the survey questions for the following reasons: 1. I think your group is in credibly courageous, thoughtful, insightful, and, well I think you are great! I absolutely love and respect every single thing you do. 2, Could you have more courageous people providing a more varied reporting set? Sure. But I know you’re limited by the number of subscribers you have and the number of reporters you can support. I salute every one of you, and I’m sticking with you as long as you’re able to continue your mission. Thank you, every one of you.
Thank you so much for this comment, it genuinely means a great deal to all of us.🫂 I’m curious, are there any stories, regions, or voices from Ukraine you especially want to hear more about?
Anna, I grew up in a small state (New Hampshire) in the Northeastern USA. Further to the east, there’s only the Atlantic Ocean. To the North, only Canada. I had the privilege and the pleasure to meet and work with many Ukrainian Emigres and the children of Emigres, and we shared many common stories. My parents were immigrants too. What I learned from these fellow children of immigrants was that most had a favorable view of hard work, and the ability to stare down difficult times with a smile on their faces and a diligent manner that was used as a way to see themselves through such hard times. Many had stories of their parents departure from their homes, since I am old most of these stories shared a timeline of escaping the Nazi’s, the Russians and more. I only say this because what I see in the stories you post so often is an incredible amount of determination of the Ukrainian people in the face of horrific attack. And I appreciate every story you post. What I want to know is in the face of the destruction of an apartment with dozens missing and dozens more confirmed as died in the attack, would you consider telling the story or stories of those who survived? What they lost? And most important, how they continue on and what your fellow countrymen and countrywomen do to help. It’s not some morbid fascination, it, in my mind, is the story of your people; the ability to persevere. I am no historian, but I know some history of Russian Empire (and Mongol, and Ottoman, and more) abuse of the Ukrainian people. And I know your history of surviving and prospering against aggression and Empire. I see that in your people today, and it gives me great hope for humankind despite all the evidence to the contrary - in your home and (I hope) in mine. Thank you
Thank you for your outstanding and dedicated service to the truth. I rely on your informative articles. Although I am not a man of faith, your situation is very much in my thoughts and I am deeply concerned for everyone's safety and well-being during this horrendous time.
I appreciate all that you do. Ukraine and its fight is too important for it to be ignored (or taken for granted). You are a valuable contribution to my understanding of it and I look forward to all of your posts, multi-media or otherwise. Thank you.
I wish that your survey had a space for comments and suggestions. Regarding your first question, about format, I prefer a mix of first person and character driven reporting. Both are important to getting Ukraine's voices heard. Breaking news can be somewhat duplicative of information posted in social media (in my case, Bluesky) except when you can include more detailed narrative or information. You are doing great work!
You all are doing great work. It is a privilege to subscribe. Thank you for all the work you do. You are appreciated. You all are in my prayers everyday. This is democracy in action.
I enjoy reading and I’m a paid subscriber. The one thing I would love is overall how the war is going. Doesn’t have to be all the time, but I’ve lost the thread of how it is going. As you say, many of the mainstream news, don’t cover the war and if they do, it seems more on specific articles. Like lately, a lot about Ukrainian drones and expertise. I tried to look at some of the map sites, but it’s confusing.
I'm new here, but have been to a few rallies in DC to support our brothers and sisters in Ukraine, but I still feel pretty helpless and unsure how to help. I already call my reps about Ukraine. Knowing legit organizations to connect with locally around the country would be meaningful. Reading the stories without helping is painful. A to do list from those who know all relevant details would be great.
I would prefer more actual news stories or inside looks at how the military is operating. I loved your reporting on the jeweler who pivoted to making drones. I care less about cooking, clothing, and the stories focused around those things.
💪The "how the military is operating" is covered by many sources, especially on YouTube where they can show as well as tell. Also on BlueSky there are a few outlets giving such updates. The Counteroffensive to me covers the human side of holding a country together while being under active attack from a relentless & unprincipled attacker 🤷
You're right about the decline in news coverage of the war. In that light, it would be great if you could include some bullet points—sort of like your Iran coverage—that bring us up to date on straightforward news from the war. Have new weapons shipments arrived? Is the EU discussing aid to Ukraine? Is Ukraine's new role as modern-war consultant yielded new investment in the country or Ukraine's armed forces? Is there news of instability in Russia given the war's immense human and economic cost there? Some of these items could be full-blown news stories; others could just be one-paragraph summaries that appeared above main story of the day, whether that's a profile, a personal essay, or a full-fledged update on the "peace talks" (such as they are).
Thank you for this thoughtful feedback!! Also, our sister publication the Arsenal has more on defence tech innovation and regulation in Ukraine, so you might want to check it out. https://www.arsenal.eu
I subscribe to both Counteroffensive and Iran War Dispatch on Substack (paid). If another platform better serves you, I'll follow you there, but only IF it's ad-free for all subscribers (free and paid). Your version of breaking news ususally arrives before anyone else's, and I read for your in-depth reporting on war/resistance. As an American, I want to know the implications/repercussions of my government's words and actions. I hear from POTUS & chronies ad nauseum on BBC and mainstream US media, but what does it mean for Ukraine? Iran? We can all speculate, but I prefer to hear facts from you.
I'm a subscriber and don't have strong opinions about the questions asked. While I don't always read the character driven or first person journalism, I'm always glad it is there to personalize what's happening in Ukraine. Frequency depends on length -- prefer more frequent, shorter posts. Deep-dive investigations and expert analysis sound good. Neutral about the platform, whatever works best for you. What you are doing is important and greatly appreciated.
You all do a wonderful job. I truly appreciate your dedication and determination to get the story. However the Counteroffensive evolves, I will still keep reading. Thank you and stay safe. ❤️
