Despite what populist far-right movements are trying to convince the world everywhere they pop up, diversity absolutely does lead to strength. Ideas of cultural and racial purity leading to strength are unscientific garbage that should have long been consigned to the dumpsters of history.

I continue to be impressed and in awe of the resiliency of the people of Ukraine, and now Sweden. I hope Zmiivka is rebuilt and restored to its former glory.

Praise to Sweden for its measures in defense of Ukraine and of itself. Well done, Sweden!

If you drive south from metro Phoenix, you enter what looks to be a Mexican slum. This is the village of Guadalupe, bordered by an interstate highway to the west and urban sprawl surrounding it otherwise. In 1900 the Yaqui (Yoemem) native people fled Mexico to escape religious persecution. They were "discovered" in 1533 by the Spanish slave hunter, Guzman, as Spain consolidated its hold on what is now Mexico. With the Spanish conquest, Catholicism was forced onto them, but the Yaqui were wise and chose the Jesuits, known for scholarship rather than dogma. What resulted was a melding of Christianity and the Yoemem religion. Easter is the major religious holiday. The figure of Christ is represented by the deer, and there are deer dances and songs performed at other times of the year, according to Evers and Molina (1997, Yaqui Deer Songs). Similar to several other tribes who see death as returning to another realm which is a time-place of goodness, harmony as well as the place of origin. It is the Flower World. So during Easter, the recreation of the Passion is performed in the church plaza with the deer dancer hounded by the evil Pharisees who are vanquished by flowers. At one time, I endeavored to see the pageant for myself. The religious elements that comprise several days is closed to the general public, but the last day/evening it is open. I couldn't find a parking place within a mile of the plaza, and so I gave up, but several of my students were more resilient and were impressed by the Yoemem interpretation of Easter. One caveat, I am fairly ignorant about this tribe; my scholarship was quite limited, so others much more conversant with this particular population might have conflicting accounts.

My city shares a very not surprising relationship with Scotland, which is where the founders were from. Being American means most cities are related to somewhere else.

What an interesting story and Russia is a [VERY BAD THING] that seemingly offers nothing but manipulation, meddling, misery, and mayhem, since they sprung up from the Muscovy mud.

Holy clickbait title, Batman! But very good article otherwise.

(Original title was "Russia destroyed Swedish village. But there is a nuance", new title is much better)
