Behind the scenes with a protester charged with ‘verbally abusing the police’ and ‘not obeying police orders.’ Georgia’s presidential election is today, but the anti-Russian opposition is boycotting.
I wish more Americans were taking note of these events and the bravery of Georgian citizens like Giorgi. The longer we wait to protest what’s happening here, the harder it will be to protect our civil liberties and democratic way of life.
Thank you so much for this informative post on the situation in Georgia, Counteroffensive team - Russia has been permitted to infiltrate so many countries since the collapse of the USSR, and sadly the West in particular assumed that Russia had turned over a new leaf. Putin, of course, represents all that is evil in that country, but the EU, US and the UK welcomed this demon-spawn and his ilk into the West with open arms. Now we are seeing the results...
I will never forget when George W. said he looked into Putin's soul, or Romney being dismissed as hysterical when he said Russia is our threat. And now one of the two major parties in the U.S. is blatantly pro-Russia.
I can't help feeling that it will take Putin's demise to start the process, but I fear that irreparable damage will have been done. With Trump's imminent accession to power, lasting damage will have been inflicted on all democracies. The 21st Century has seen some serious setbacks to the equality, liberty and fraternity, the French Revolution espoused (but failed miserably to promulgate). What with the double-edged sword of climate change and corporate greed, I fear that our society is edging closer to the apocalypse so many authors are dreaming of...
I am amazed by the bravery exhibited by the Georgians and Ukrainians and stunned by my fellow Americans living in relative comfort either shitposting on social media all day or whine about egg prices while re-electing a convicted felon to office again.
I totally agree with you. I am filled with such admiration of the Georgian people protesting the Russian interference. If we witnessed these events in the past in America- we would be so grateful we lived in a democracy. Not anymore.
The entire Russian world can fuck right off forever. I hope, when our time comes, Americans prove to be at least half as brave as Georgians and Ukrainians.
I like everything but absolutely love the reporting as an event is very current . You are so very descriptive with your stories and I actually try to picture myself in Ukraine in that moment. It is first hand reporting that is so vivid and accurate. You are so brave. Stay safe !
😥 So sad that Georgians & Ukrainians (& obviously others) have to put their freedom & lives at risk because so-called "leaders" can't abide anyone who doesn't bow down to their every whim & stifle their individuality to become obedient little robots 🤬- it is inspiring to hear about the young people standing up for their beliefs. Interesting about Russia trying to get out of Syria - I smiled at the reference to their being fearful of being attacked as I was thinking "Hmmm... sitting ducks or what?" Too bad the Ukrainian drone operators are back home eh? 🤔💛💙

Thank you for sharing your thoughts, Nigel! Do you think this tendency of welcoming Russia will decline in the next few years?

Cindy, thank you so much for your comment - it’s heartbreaking, isn’t it? But also inspiring to see young people standing firm for their beliefs.
President Zurabishvili is a saint. I worry for her safety.
